Many events are scheduled and will be themed around nautical activities in honor of the 100th birthday of the North Pier Lighthouse in St. Joseph.
Select from fun and educational experiences ranging from boat-building and art exhibits to concerts and historical presentations.  Many events are already planned, and more are yet to come!

Build Your Own Sea Kayak
For teens and adults
Opening Date: April 18, 2007
Additional Dates: Wed., April 18, 6:00-9:00 pm, then flexible days through May
Event Description: Use stitch and glue construction techniques to build your own 14’ – 17’ sea kayak. Boats are suitable for gentle rivers and near shore waters of the Great Lakes. Each participant will go home with a paint ready; wood and fiberglass kayak. Instructor is an experienced canoe and kayak paddler and builder.

Space is limited; registration with 50% down payment must be received by April 9. Balance due at start of class. Call for a more complete description and for a list of required basic hand tools.

Bright Lights, Bright Minds

Event Description: Every year, 4th graders from St. Joseph schools complete a lighthouse project, in which they make models of a Lake Michigan lighthouse. The Heritage Center and Curious Kids' Museum have invited the students to display their models for you to view.

Boat Building for Young Mariners

Event Description: Ahoy matey! Build a skiff 22" long by 6" wide by 4" deep with instructor Tom Hurst. Build your boat on day one, then make your mark as you paint on day two, and have a regatta on the final day! All materials are included.

Lost Skills 101: Nautical Knots

Event Description: Join instructor Tom Hurst and WOW your friends with your survival skills as you make ropes from fun and colorful fibers. Learn rope tricks, fancy knots and more. Use these ropes for tying up at the dock, jumping rope, pets' leashes and more. You never know when you could use these skills! Bring a sack lunch with you. All materials are included.

Whether our last encounter with the lakes was a walk along a sandy shore or an off-coast sail, we all feel a connection with the water which is strengthened by enjoying these works.

Please join us for the opening reception Friday, June 15, 5:30-7:30pm. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments and music will be provided.

Lost on the Lakes: Shipwrecks of Berrien County with Bob Myers

Event Description: The harbor at St. Joseph served as one of Lake Michigan's busiest 19th century commercial ports. The heavy volume of shipping inevitably resulted in many shipwrecks. This illustrated program tells the stories of these infamous and sometimes obscure shipwrecks that occurred along Berrien County. Bob Myers is the curator of The History Center at Courthouse Square in Berrien Springs. His program is adapted from his book of the same title, published by Andrews University Press in 2003.
