Lighthouse Exhibits Opening Reception

The Heritage Museum & Cultural Center
601 Main Street
St. Joseph, MI 49085
Contact Name: The Heritage Museum & Cultural Center
2699831191

Event Date:06/14/2018

Event Description:The Heritage Museum & Cultural Center in St. Joseph is celebrating our statewide and local lighthouse heritage in 2018 with new exhibitions! Out on the North Pier, a display is set to debut inside the iconic Inner Lighthouse on June 1. At the Heritage Museum, special exhibits throughout 2018 highlight the history and legacy of lighthouses across the state. Museum visitors can also view the restored Fresnel Lenses from St. Joseph’s North Pier Lights— it is the only exhibit on the Great Lakes featuring a pair of Fresnel Lenses from the same range light system. An Opening Celebration is planned, with a reception at the museum on Thursday, June 14 and special free tours at the lighthouse June 15-16. On the North Pier: The St. Joe Lighthouse Tour Exhibition Enter the North Pier’s Inner Lighthouse & Fog Signal Building and step into the old lighthouse keeper’s shoes. Explore historic photos, maps, and reproductions. Enjoy the opportunity to climb up to the lantern for a breathtaking view of the harbor (must be 4 feet tall). Catch a photo-opportunity with St. Joseph’s longtime Lighthouse Keeper, Captain Ollhoff! This long-term interpretive exhibit on the pier was made possible by a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The project was also funded by a grant from the Berrien Community Foundation and a gift from Entergy - Palisades Power Plant. The exhibit is available to be viewed during walking tours and open hours offered throughout the summer. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, FREE open hours are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays, 11:00am to 2:00pm, weather permitting. Learn more at www.StJoeLighthouseTours.org and look for daily updates on our Facebook Page, Facebook.com/StJoeLighthouseTours. Additional Special Open Hours in 2018 are: Thursday, June 21, 7:00-10:00pm (Solstice Sunset); Friday, July 13, 7:00-10:00pm (Krasl Art Fair Weekend); and Sunday, September 2, 8:00-11:00am (Tri-State Regatta Departures). At the Museum: “Michigan Lighthouses” and “Ladies of the Lights” To complement the new exhibit on the pier, two traveling exhibitions exploring lighthouse history are featured at the Heritage Museum through the end of 2018. Michigan Lighthouses: An Aerial Photographic Perspective presents the stunning work of pilot John L. Wagner, who photographed every Michigan lighthouse while flying his own Cessna 172 airplane. Mr. Wagner published a hardcover book of his photography in 1993 which became the basis for this traveling exhibit. With more than 75 aerial photographs on display throughout the museum, an exhibition booklet accompanies the display to provide a location reference and more background about each Light. Additions include models and mementos of the St. Joseph North Pier Lighthouses. Mr. Wagner will visit St. Joseph for two presentations about his photography; complete details are listed below. The second traveling exhibit looks closer at the stories and experiences of lighthouse keepers— Ladies of the Lights: Michigan Women in the U.S. Lighthouse Service. Lighthouse keeping in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was a rugged life filled with long hours and hard work, punctuated by periods of real peril. Still, at least 50 women in Michigan were employed as lighthouse keepers. This comprehensive exhibit, developed by the Michigan Women’s Historical Center & Hall of Fame, shares their stirring stories of dedication, courage, and determination. These museum exhibits invite visitors to try their hand building a LEGO lighthouse, and to “dress the keeper” in a section about Lighthouse Service uniforms. Visitors can also take a seat to view a selection of aerial drone footage of the St. Joseph Lighthouses, provided courtesy of the Great Lakes Drone Company. Opening Celebration Events June 14-16, 2018 • Lighthouse Exhibits Opening Reception – Thursday, June 14 The Heritage Museum & Cultural Center, 601 Main Street, St. Joseph 5:00 - 6:30pm – Refreshments served, Exhibits open. Using a set of skills learned over 9,000 hours of flying and 40 years working in the aviation industry, John L. Wagner photographed every lighthouse in Michigan from the sky. Starting in 1986, the project took six and a half years and resulted in a self-published 11x14” tabletop book in 1993. In this program, Mr. Wagner discusses his airplane, flying, and composition techniques, the camera equipment used, and the publishing process. Guided by his smooth vocals and lyric songwriting, listeners can expect a musical journey through the human condition – the question of disenchantment, the crossroads of doubt, a point of faith, a moment of whimsy, a tenuous hope.   Marty Miles is much more than your basic singer, guitarist, and songwriter type. A consummate entertainer - a modern troubadour in the purest sense – he pulls you in. It’s not uncommon for the audience to become a part of the show. And, whether he’s performing solo, with his acoustic trio or full electric band, expect to hear music from his most recent CD, Folk/Rock Adventures (available on iTunes & CD Baby) and his previous albums, seamlessly woven with smart covers of likely and unlikely suspects.

Jethro Tull by Ian Anderson

Four Winds Casino

New Buffalo, MI 49117
Contact Name: Four Winds Casino
8664946371 Fax: 8664946371

Event Date:06/30/2018

Event Description:Early in 1968, a group of British musicians joined together in Luton, a town north of London, to form Jethro Tull. They began playing in pubs and clubs throughout southern England, eventually landing a standing gig at London’s famous Marquee Club in Soho. The first album, This Was, was released in late 1968, followed by Stand Up, Benefit, Aqualung and Thick As a Brick. Various band members came and went, but the charismatic front man and composer, flutist and singer Ian Anderson, continued to lead the group through its various musical incarnations. By the mid-70s, Jethro Tull was one of the most successful live performing acts on the world stage, rivaling Led Zeppelin, Elton John and the Rolling Stones. Today, with over 30 albums selling more than 50 million copies, Jethro Tull continues to perform over 100 concerts each year. The lineup for the 2018 tour is Ian Anderson (flute, vocals, acoustic guitar); Florian Opahle (guitarist); Scott Hammond (drummer); John O’Hara (piano, accordion, vocals); and David Goodier (bass guitar, vocals).

No wigs or fake English accents, GTLO brings what the audience wants…a high energy Zeppelin concert with an honest, heart-thumping intensity. The band consists of Paul Sinclair - lead vocals, harmonica; Paul Hammond - electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin, Theremin; Jimmy Marchiano - electric and acoustic guitars, vocals; Andrew Lipke - keyboards, guitar, vocals, percussion; Adam Ferraioli - drums, percussion; and Phil D'Agostino – bass.

New Buffalo, MI 49117
Contact Name: Four Winds Casino
8664946371

Event Date:07/20/2018

Event Description:The fourth of seven children, John Royce Mathis was born on September 30, 1935 in Gilmer, Texas. As a small boy he learned an appreciation of music from his father Clem who taught him his first song, “My Blue Heaven”. He sang in the church choir, school functions, community events, for visitors in their home as well as amateur shows in the San Francisco area. In 1954, Johnny enrolled at San Francisco State College (now called San Francisco State University). While there, Johnny set a high jump record of 6’-5 1/2”. Just as when he was in high school, Johnny’s name was frequently mentioned in the sports sections of the Northern California newspapers. While there, a fellow student brought Johnny in for a Sunday afternoon jam session at a local nightclub. It was at the Black Hawk that Helen Noga, co-owner of the club, first heard him sing. She decided that she wanted to manage his career. In early September of 1955, Johnny landed a job singing weekends at Ann Dee’s 440 Club. He continued his studies at San Francisco State and gained additional fame as a high jumper. In early 1956, Johnny was asked to attend the trials for the 1956 Olympic teams that would travel to Melbourne, Australia that summer. At the same time, Columbia Records requested that Johnny come to New York to start arrangements for his first recording session. Clem helped his son decide that his future and best interests were with the recording company. So, Johnny gave up his chance to become a member of the USA Olympic Team. He went to New York to record his first album in March of 1956.

The FSJ Project offers a variety of opportunities for the public to get involved as a means of sharing knowledge about local archaeological investigations and the history of the City of Niles, MI. Fort St. Joseph, founded in 1691, was an important French mission, trading post, and military garrison until it was abandoned in 1781. During its time, FSJ was controlled by four countries; France, Britain, Spain, and America, as well as multiple Native American Indian Tribes, including the Potawatomi. In 1998, Niles’ Support the Fort, Inc. called on WMU’s Dr. Michael Nassaney to conduct an investigation to locate Fort St. Joseph. Over the last 20 years, Dr. Nassaney and teams of WMU students have worked to uncover the history of Niles’ Fort St. Joseph in conjunction with WMU’s Archaeological Field School, which is certified by the Register for Professional Archaeologists. Join us Saturday, August 4 & Sunday, August 5 10:00am – 4:00pm at the corner of Fort and Bond Streets in Niles, MI for our annual Archaeology Open House that is FREE and open to the public. People of all ages are invited to attend to: - Meet WMU archaeologists working at the FSJ archaeological site - Observe period demonstrations at the Living History Village - Explore the active FSJ archaeological site - Participate in children’s activities and crafts - View recently uncovered artifacts - Listen to period music and participate in period dance

Event Description:Theresa Caputo is from TLC’s hit show, Long Island Medium, which follows Theresa’s life as a typical Long Island wife and mom with one very big difference…she can communicate with the dead. Since she cannot “turn off” this gift, messages from departed loved ones can come through at any time, which leads to spontaneous readings with those she encounters. During her appearance at Four Winds New Buffalo, Theresa will share personal stories about her life and explain how her gift works. She will deliver healing messages to audience members and give people comfort knowing their loved ones who passed are still with them, just in a different way. “The Experience” brings Theresa face-to-face with her fans, as she lets the spirit guide her through the audience. A video display ensures everyone in the venue has an up-close-hands-on experience regardless of seat location. “The experience isn’t about believing in mediums. It’s about witnessing something life-changing,” Theresa says. “It’s like Long Island Medium live, witnessing first-hand spirit communication.”

Dablon Vineyards and Winery
111 W. Shawnee Rd
Baroda, MI 49101
Contact Name: Dablon Vineyards and Winery
2694222846

Event Date:11/11/2018

Event Description:With a serious nod to the 60’s folk/rock revolution and sensitivity to current trends, the music of Indiana artist Marty Miles is simultaneously divergent and classic.
